June in Rivercrest

Welcome to all my blogging friends!

It's so easy to find something to blog about in summer when all our flowers and plants are blooming in profusion.  This summer has been particularly wonderful in Eastern North Carolina due to low humidity and a great late afternoon temperature - perfect for sitting on the swing on our patio watching birds and listening to them sing.

Birds are the feature in our garden this year - self made feature!  We have identified many and they have had babies in the thicket, our birdhouses and continue to procreate as I speak!  Baby birds singing overcome all other sounds - save the teenager and his motorbike on the next street over!

Please enjoy some pictures, videos and comments in the next few days here in the Rivercrest Garden.

A Spring walk in Charleston

A Spring Walk In Charleston

Click on the link above to see a picture story of our walk in Charleston last Friday, April 21 - It was an absolutely perfect spring day - almost too hot though!  I won't complain because the light and the breeze was just fabulous.  Not to mention the scent of Confederate Jasmine - which you see here all along the walls.  It totally filled the air and was so pretty!!  We were so fortunate to be there while it was blooming.  We may have missed the azaleas and the wisteria - but I think this was even more special!  Mike and Coco are in many of the pictures - and Romeo was on my arm.  The pictures aren't exactly the best - but I was hanging onto Romeo the whole time.

Natures Secret Gifts

so.......
While we were walking around the garden, listening to the buzzing bees, chirping birds in our thicket hedge of azaleas,
Camille decided to pick a white clematis bloom from the 10+ year old vine growing on a white trellis at our "little garden house" by the small fish, frog and turtle pond.
I was standing with her and there - right in front of us, not even hiding, was a bird nest about the size of a grapefruit!  Camille held her phone over the top - being careful not to touch it at all - and took a few photos.
To our sincere astonishment - there were pretty hefty eggs inside! Beautiful, speckled and perfect bird's eggs.
My husband, the botanist and biologist gave us an assessment of "not sure" of which kind of bird's eggs they are.  We think Cardinal (based on the fact that the nest is about 5 feet off the ground) but there is a good chance they are Robin's eggs.  They do look pale pale blue to me.  My favorite color is Robin's egg blue.
Take a look and let me know what your guess is!

Pinwheels and Romeo barking

Here is a link to a short video I made today of my pinwheels blowing in the breezy garden.  I hope you enjoy it!

My husband, Mike, the brains and green thumb in the family

I love Pinwheels!!

The Charleston Style Garden, all cleaned out from winter overgrowth - thanks to Mike, of course

The Rose Garden after cleaning out, mulching, fertilizing, etc.  It is growing well

My brother, Scott, enjoying Spring weather - visiting us from Canada and my husband, Mike planting in the background

See the Ballerina climber at the front edge of the white fence.  It is doing so great - lots of blooms ready to open in the next week or so.
Mermaid climber and Largo climber among the iris and a pink knockout rose in front of the trellis. Mike added some strong cedar limbs which he recently trimmed from our cedar tree as more growing support for the climbers.  The smell is strong and just wonderful!

Our beautiful Ballerina bush climbing over the top this year - cannot wait to see it at the middle of summer!  Tulips, Johnny Jump Ups and the big red hose.

The Blaze climber - deer fodder last year - but I am fighting already with Liquid Fence spray and another repellent .  Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Graham Thomas climber - not enough sun :(

The Clematis at our little garden house.  One of the oldest plants in our yard - the first to bloom every year!

My Hellebores, Lenten Roses are still looking great - started blooming in January!
